B&N’s New Nook Wireless book reader Gets Ready for Battle With Amazon.com’s Portable eBook Reader

B+N--500xbothThe up-to-the-minute Nook wireless portable reading device being produced by Barnes and Noble, the worlds main book shop with in excess of 1,300 branches, seems all set to lock horns with the worlds #1 selling ebook reader device, the Kindle .

Though not long launched, the Nook is looking to ruffle Amazon’s feathers even more by taking it on straightforwardly in a part of the market-place, that up to yet, the Kindle has dominated. Ever since it’s introduction, firstly as the Kindle then later on in February 2009 as the Kindle , it has re-ignited the portable reading device market by offering a blend of radical specification, through it’s instantaneous connect anyplace wireless networking and also the leading choice of titles available for download at superb, cheaper than the high street, prices.

Customers brought in to the concept in a big way and it is just recently that the rest of the business have woken up to the truth that this is the future of book retail. An so in the last few months we have had the announcement from Sony of their intention to unite in the fun, with their soon to be launched Daily Edition, and the latest press release from B&N that their own candidate, the Nook, will return to full manufacture very soon.

There are no doubts that the Amazon kindle 2 is the device everyone is gunning for. And to be frank it’s pleasing to see a little rivalry in this market. Yes we have had the iRex iLiad but it was some what on the large side to be a wireless ebook reader, ideal for office use with the 1:1 A4 reproduction, but much like the Dx – another revolutionary wireless reading device – not something you may want to take on holiday, or put in your bag or pocket for that matter, and it was by no means going to vie on cost was it?

As a result now we have 2 outsized companies prepared to go head to head, with the strength of Amazon, on all fronts. The sony corporation of late improved the magnitude of their library at the Sony-Store and reduced the prices of their digitally transported books to match that of Amazons and with a bit of luck B&N, who have always been in the identical ballpark affordability wise, will equal them title for title too.

But the leading news bulletin for clients has to be the shift away from proprietary file formats, used by Sony in the early days and in spite of everything used by the Kindle2 now. To make clear the state of affairs I will apply Amazon as an example, bear in mind this is still the case with the Kindle2 so it makes it more clear.

By proprietary formats, when you obtain a book for digital download from Amazon it will come in their specific file format .AZW that only allows you to read it on the Kindle2. So if in the future you decided you sought to switch reading devices to another make, your library of ebooks become useless. Decide if it’s passable or not.

That situation has been a big difficulty for the business in general but also for the makers of other ebook readers in particular. They where never going to be able to offer the plethora of titles Amazon.co.uk where competent of doing and so this aided sales of the Kindle . And so they present assist for additional file formats, mainly the Adobe .PDF, which is a much loved standard for free electronic books, but this format does not reproduce a scaled down type of text that well as it was always supposed to be reproducing text at an A4 size, picture perfect for the Kindledx and iLiad e-readers but not so for the smaller 5,6 and 7 inch screens.

Therefore came the Epub format, an open source format planned to show text. It is fast emerging as the standard of the future and has recieved encouragement from the likes of Google Library who shall be releasing their entire one million books, of which the greater part are at no cost to down load, in this format. B&N will also be going the same way to the same degree will the Sony-Store.

So you should see that the electronic book reader that has backing for this format will be future resistant. B&N’s Nook Revolutionary wireless reading device has .Epub support, as does the Sony Daily Edition, and so you can download your e books from wherever you wish, paid for or free, moreover not simply from the manufacturer of the digital e book reader , which is the case with the Kindle electronic book reader.

I would like to buy an ebook reader, I have read that sony ebook 505 and iliad ebook reader are the best options but I am still little confused on which one to buy. I am an avid reader and I travel a lot, I would use the ebook reader to read books/novels mainly so screen quality must be a priority… I won’t mind all the other cool functions but good screen it is a must, my eyes are quite sensitive. Thanks for advices!
I live outside US so I can not buy kindle 2

Has Anyone Tried The Kindle Or Kindle 2? Just Books Or Mag’s/newspapers Too? Kindle Or Netbook? Opinions?

I have a Digital Subscription for Scientific American Mag and I am looking for a portable reader to take with me because I’m sick of being stuck in my office to read um’.
The Kindle 2 is REALLY expensive so if I’m going to save up that kind of cash, I’m debating between a Kindle 2 or one of those NetBooks. At least with a netbook, you can do more then just read black and white.
What is your experience with either a Kindle or a Netbook?
Thanks for any info you can provide!
